More information:

Rigid paper box measurements are based on inside dimensions, from score line to score line. Size is given in inches, and tolerances can be held to 64ths of an inch. In measuring the size box desired, give dimensions in the following order: length x width x depth. Base measurements determine the dimensions of the lid. It is important to state the type of cover-- full telescope, partial telescope, hinged, etc.

Materials:

The essential parts of a box are paperboard, paper, and glue. The weight and grade of paperboard used in the manufacture of rigid boxes depends upon:

1. size
2. weight of article to be packaged
3. appearance.

The choice of board also determines the strength and rigidity of the box. Consequently, great care should be taken in specifying board stock... in determining the weight and finish. There are many grades of boxboard. It is measured in 1000ths of an inch and stocked from .035 thru .100 in both white and plain finishes and can even be dyed to achieve a solid color throughout the sheet.

Manufacturing

a. The paperboard is cut and scored to specified box size. Often there are several blanks scored at the same time from one long sheet. This is referred to as the number up on a sheet. (figure 1 below)
